Remote Diagnostic of surging Baja

Post by joedavex »

My son who lives 700 miles away called in with a Baja problem.
His 2005 turbo Baja suddenly developed a surge to it. It does it when idling in park or driving, making it unable to be driven.
He sent me a video of the idle surge but unfortunately I can't attach it to the post. Here's a youtube video of it: https://youtu.be/vyx3A3nPLGM
Car has not thrown a code for anything yet.
Had him do a visual inspection for possible vacuum leaks, nothing.
Had him plug in a bluetooth OBD scanner and check for vacuum and it staying consistently at -19 to -20 at idle (surging).
pulled the sensor data for the throttle position sensor and it is staying constant during the surge.

He only had a little time at lunch today to do a few things, haven't had more feedback from him yet on other readings.
Any thoughts on what it could be?
I asked a friend who used to be a Subie mechanic years ago and he suggested the IACV. It has not thrown a code so I'm looking to see if there is a IACV test or data reading I can pull from ODB.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe

Got the mouse/squirrel nest cleaned out of the airbox and car is back to running great. Now I sent him off to buy a metal reinforced air cleaner 🙂
