manual trans sounds like rocks in a blender
So I just got this 03 baja base model non turbo. The trans has a knocking noise(like go knock on your door) it does it in neutral first and reverse and only when the clutch is engaged press it and the sound stops. Coming straight from the bell housing clutch area I know it needs a clutch and shift linkage. I'm hoping it's the fingers on the pressure plate. Let me know what you think it is thanks

To many variables to speculate....
Re: manual trans sounds like rocks in a blender
I just don't want to dump 700 bucks into the clutch flywheel and shift linkage and then more parts when I get in there I know I have to buy those parts and I'm getting exedy clutch and flywheel and a sti short shifter linkage assemble. Not getting the cheap shit, I just don't want to get it all apart and the LA find oUT there's something bigger and have to keep it off the road longer.

I would definitely do clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing at the least... You might be able to have the flywheel surfaced if need be, or just replace it while you are in there depending on price. .
Re: manual trans sounds like rocks in a blender
Yeah that's what I have to do already it's at 129k anyways probably never been done before.
Re: manual trans sounds like rocks in a blender
But Idk if that will solve my issues it's a long shot. Plus we don't have very many tranny shops here on island and they cost an arm and a leg. Makes your but hurt when they get done with you
Re: manual trans sounds like rocks in a blender
Someone has to know what this is or have dealt with it in the past. I'm in the process of ordering parts just want to order every th ING at 1 time please help
Re: manual trans sounds like rocks in a blender
Video of the noise would help immensely, otherwise I'm voting it's the throw-out. Lots of labour to get to it so might as well get Clutch, PP, and flywheel done while you're in there.
I've been using Function Auto for most of my part needs, great service and quick shipping. Just shoot them an email to get what you're looking for, the website isn't the easiest to navigate and they carry a lot more than what's listed on it.

One thing I saw online was that while I'm in there since Idk how long he drove it like this is that I should buy some kind of sleeve and oversized tob because the shaft is aluminum and it could be worn to badly. What is the kit called and where can I get it?

Re: manual trans sounds like rocks in a blender
Just this past winter the bearings in the rear of the trans started whining real bad. So I ordered the 4 new bearings. A week before I had time to replace them, the trans started making a terrible noise. Like rocks in a blender. I was able to get it home and in the garage. I drained the trans fluid and a huge chunk of metal came out.
After that I ended up having to pull the trans out. Split the case and find out what broke. The ring gear and pinon gear both broke teeth off.

Anything could be broken in the trans. You could start by draining the fluid, lookin for chunks of metal and checking the drain plug magnet. If that checks out just refill the trans.

I did the work myself. One of the many benefits of having a certified Subaru mechanic as a close friend. He talked me through the process.
I would say for the bearings, gaskets, ring gear and pinion, fluid and a few new sockets, I spent right around $900. All parts were purchased from my local Subaru dealership.

As far as I'm aware that's an issue for the 05-09 Legacy GT's and that other subaru's aren't really affected by it. If you find yours is trashed, then yeah, you can go ahead and get this type of fix.mjbaja wrote:One thing I saw online was that while I'm in there since Idk how long he drove it like this is that I should buy some kind of sleeve and oversized tob because the shaft is aluminum and it could be worn to badly. Re: manual trans sounds like rocks in a blender
All of the noise on mine is most noticeable in the bell housing leading me to believe that it is clutch or tob related I won't know for sure until parts arrive but here in Hawaii that takes a while. I don't want to rip into it until they get here fluid looks ok.. needed to be changed but no real chunks in there so hopefully no real damage there.
Re: manual trans sounds like rocks in a blender
Here something I just thought of. The shifter isn't right I have to fish for gears even when in gear I can move the shifter around like a spoon in a soup bowl. Could the linkage have backed off and the screw on part that the fork concepts to be bouncing around inside the bellhousing?
