Someone posted somewhere that the EJ257 (turbo?) head gaskets would raise my compression a little since they are thinner MultiLayerSteel and wont be prone to leakage like my stock ones. Mine are leaking oil from one spot and coolant from another. I have a 2003 baja, SOHC.
Its drivable but its aggravating because the oil drips on the exhaust and smells like a log truck, which is bad enough, but now its dripping on our new asphalt driveway and we all know what oil does to asphalt. I dont want to wait till it starts getting coolant in the oil...
Anyhow I figured if I was doing all this, I would raise the compression ratio a little to give it some ooomph since the truck is in excellent shape, was well maintained, and the bottom end is probably very tight still. I built engines a lot in school for auto machinist major, just never a Scooby.
My main questions are... are those turbo head gaskets thinner?
Will they also work right in a SOHC and still have correct oil/coolant passages?
Will they still allow valves to clear stock pistons?
I considered new h/c pistons and rings, but not only are they high as all get out, the HG fix seems more logical since thats the sole reason I'm having to fix it in the first place.
Head gaskets in SOHC EJ25, can I use EJ257 head gaskets?

There are turbo gaskets that line up perfectly, but they are thicker, lowering compression. They work great is what I hear, no noticeable drivability issues from the lower compression.

well shoot. trying to actually raise compression without changing pistons. the only pistons i can find are 450 a set w raised compression. my engine is tight and runs great, just have to change my gaskets so i figured that could be one way, thinner mls gaskets. but... how much could i get the heads milled safely? i dont mind running higher octane gas, as long as there is some performance benefit to justify it. how much to shops normally charge to mill 2 heads? i figured i could have that done while changing the gaskets already. either way, definitely going with the felpro new designed mls gaskets. i can get them locally. they use mls gaskets on all the subaru part #s now not just turbo.
