Blown Turbo

Post by WookyMonster »

I was driving the other day and started to get a pretty bad shake during idle and bouncy during acceleration. CEL came one and the cruise control light was blinking. went to AZ to have the codes pulled. P0011, 21, 0202, and 0204. Camshaft position blah blah blah bank 1 and 2, and misfire cylinders 2 and 4. Had my brother look at the AVCS solenoids and oil screens. Sure enough, one of the screens busted and jammed up one of the noids. He took the screens out and unjammed the solenoid. It ran fine for about an hour, then on the highway, CEL came back on, and I had no boost. Took it back to him to check out the oil screen goign to the turbo. He said it was pretty dirty so he took it out. Tried to drive it, still no boost and tons of white smoke. Cleaned the screen and put it back in, no effect. He and I assume the turbo is gone. Is this a good assumption? If so, move on tot he next paragraph, if not, any other ideas on what could be wrong?

So, I'm not going to bother replacing with another stock turbo. If something breaks, I always say fix it with something better :) Obviously, with a bigger turbo, Im going to need a new IC, fuel pump, injectors, and a new tune. What else am I overlooking? Also, can I get some suggestions on the parts? Is goign to a junk yard and pulling off some STI parts going to give me some noticeable power gains?

If you can find an STI at a junkyard that hasn't had all it's useful parts pulled and sold then I give you props! A lot of parts are simply bolt on from the STI but it depends on the year and the part you are trying to swap. The TMIC and turbo (vf39,vf43) are direct bolt on's. There is a sticky floating around on here or nasioc.com on what parts will fit the Baja and if they are direct bolt ons or not.

I have the same motto as well hence why my Baja ended up with a new exhaust system! I had a clogged cat so I decided to replace the whole thing with an aftermarket TurboXS TB exhaust.

As for the turbo, I would pull it and check it to see if the seals are leaking. Since it's a TD04 you can get it rebuilt if you so choose or find a used turbo off an STI to swap.
