Opinion: Head Gasket replacement

Post by WillGT »

Ive got an 03 with about 125,000 on it manual trans. The head gaskets are seeping slightly, but have noticed lately that my coolant has been dropping pretty quick on really hot days and smell the infamous burning smell. I know I will need to have the gaskets replaced sometime with in the next 5-10k miles, that is unless I just let them leak. So my question is, if Im going to spend $1600 to 1800 on repairing the gaskets should I look into further engine work? Like a rebuild or even an engine swap. I want my Baja to last a while, but being that its already at such high mileage Im wondering if I should spend a little extra to have the engine looked at. I just don't want to spend the money for labor of a $10 part and another couple years down the road have to do engine work. My last Jeeps engine had a piston fail at 135k miles and needed a new engine.

125000 miles is no where near high mileage.
I'm at 180,000 on mine with no head gasket problems yet.

Have 357,000 miles on my dodge van with original engine and trans.

225,000 on my jeep cheroke

Just do the headgaskets, shouldnt be anything in there that needs freshned up unless it was really badly maintained.
