Modified intake system

Well my 45 degree angle rubber boots arrived today. I cut a piece of exhaust pipe down to 14".

I took the resonator unit off a few days ago. The engine really moaned around 3K rpms. With this pipe installed the intake noise is not as bad. Although some intake noise sounds pretty cool.

I also installed a K&N air cleaner while I was at it.

I'm not sure how much HP this arrangement gives me (if any) but it looks better than the resonator unit and frees up a little space.

I'll probably end up beadblasting and painting the pipe black.

I don't know if jseabolt off-roads or not, but the way I go and the pictures that you have posted, I'd worry about a straight shot from grill to filter for any water/dirt/mud. I like Snorkeled's setup for off-road.

I didn't remove the guard mounted underneath the hood that blocks water from entering the intake. I figured I'd leave it alone for that same reason.

I was driving home from work in my Turbo Yugo on July 4th and we had this massive storm. The storm sewer under the bridge got clogged from trash and I hit this 1' high puddle wide open at 30 mph before I knew it. The engine stalled. I originally though water got into the distributor but further investigation showed the engine injested water. I finally got the engine started but it didn't run right after that. For some reason the idle speed dropped 300 rpms. Then back in September I was pulling out from a redlight and BAMM! Smoke entered the cabin. The smoke scared me worse than the noise which really wasn't that loud. How this car ran for 2 months before the connecting rod broke amazes me.

It didn't appear to hurt the cylidner head. I only had 5K miles on this engine I had rebuilt. So it was off to Ohio to pick up a used one from a Fiat club member. This time I just cleaned it up, painted the block and dropped it right. Even reused the spark plugs.

I made the mistake of mounting the air cleaner directly on the turbo and not running splash shields inside the wheel wells. Since then I extended the rubber piece (from an old placemat) that was stapled to the splash shield which encloses the air cleaner. Hopefully this won't happen again.

You got an length on that tube by chance? I think i might do something like this on mine, assuming it was probably a cheap little upgrade, and man I love a decent intake sound


I even have some Baja Yellow paint laying around I could spice it up with....

I cut the pipe to exactly 14" and used 2.5" 45s from this place.

Hey all, bumping this thread because I love this setup and have another intake idea. I've been this setup (K&N included) for a little over a year now and love the way it cleans up the bay. Taking this idea one step further, has anyone mounted an air filter directly to the throttle body? I'm thinking if I could match the size right (2.75" ??), I could mount a filter directly to the TB. I would only have to figure a way to re-attach the temp sensor and the other 2 vent hoses...

Whaddya think?
