Greetings, I am hoping someone can help me here. I was driving down the highway in my 2003 Baja (EJ25 engine) at about 72mph when the check engine light came on and the engine died. It would not restart. When I checked the code (yeah I keep the code reader in the car) it came back with code P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor.
I have hunted around the web and found a check procedure to see if the sensor is good but I am getting conflicting info. One says anything below 2,000 Ohms is bad another says anything above 1,000 Ohms is good.
Anyway; the sensor reads out at 1,960 Ohms and the wiring harness has no shorts. I don't really want to spend any money that is not going to fix it. Any ideas?

Re: Error code: P0340
Part number is: 22056aa063.
The ECU isn't going to start the engine without getting a good signal from the cam and crank sensors. So it's either the sensor or the wiring.
Looks like on ebay you can grab those sensors for stupid cheap, like under $20 shipped. I'd try one of those knock-off sensors, and if it works, buy a genuine part.

I unburied my tools, lifted the hood and climbed inside (so to speak). I found the worse thing possible has happened. The timing belt broke while I was driving it. Replacing the belt is cheap enough, but now I need to reset the timing too... This is going to hurt.

Re: Error code: P0340
Here is an update for everyone interested. I contacted my local Subaru dealership and explained what happened; they want to charge me about $90.00 to check the engine for damage. If nothing is damaged it will cost about $1200.00 to change out the belt and other items needed. If the engine is damaged it could cost up to $6000.00 to fix the engine. It is possible that the engine may be too damaged to be repaired and they are having a lot of trouble getting engines that old.
I am going to pick up a timing belt at NAPA auto, realign the cogs, install the belt and pray for the best. Then I get to save up to replace the engine.
