Thats what I thought, the factory cover. Pretty bad that they will sell you the darn thing and not give you the directions. What a bunch of crap. Looks like a giant gigsaw puzzle. Mike

This is the letter I got from the company. I want to write him back and ask him why the h#ll will you make a top for only one of your cars i am pissed off  did you guys have to by your snugtops or ozzys from the dealer???

Thank you for visiting the Subaru Web site and for your message.
Congratulations on the purchase of your 2005 Baja. We hope that you are
enjoying it!

The Subaru hard bed cover is only offered as a factory-installed,
standard feature of the Baja Turbo Leather Package model. It is not an
add-on accessory. This bed cover is not available for the other Baja
models, as a dealer installed accessory.

I have been advised that two aftermarket companies are offering hard
bed covers for the Baja models. The first is a lockable bed cover
manufactured by Penda. It is a stylish way to protect your gear. Gas filled
struts allow for easy opening and trouble-free loading. This one-piece
cover is easily removed to carry tall or oversized items.

The other lockable hard bed cover is manufactured by SNUGTOP. It
features a two-piece removable design. Gas struts raise the rear section for
easy access. This cover is color coded to the Baja exterior for a
custom look.

These lockable hard top covers are not genuine Subaru accessories and
Subaru is not in a position to endorse or recommend them. Therefore, it
is up to potential purchasers to satisfy themselves that the covers
meet their quality, safety, performance and other needs. Subaru cannot
assume responsibility for any failure of these covers to perform properly
or to meet purchasers' expectations.

The vendors will only sell the covers directly to Subaru dealers. They
will not sell direct to customers. Potential customers must go to the
Subaru dealer of their choice. The dealer can then order the cover for
them. Subaru dealers are not obligated to stock or order these and may
choose not to do so. Pricing is strictly between the dealer and the
customer. Subaru of America has no recommended retail price on these
covers, as they are not Subaru of America items and are not purchased by
Subaru of America.

Please contact your local Subaru dealer for further information and
assistance.

Thanks for the opportunity to be of assistance.

Best wishes,

John J. Mergen

So I got nasty in my reply

here it is
Why would subaru make a cover and only sell it to one model and not cash in on the money for the design? Well I have to say this is my first subaru ever and it might, very well, be my last. I do not like companies who favor one customer over the other. I will be sure to share my experience and information with my family and friends.

Thanks

I am nasty but why would they do that?

Here the answer they gave me. . For those of an 05 turbo leather models it is a STANDARD feature. Interesting what they will cough up humm.

Thank you for your reply.

1. Subaru of America is absolutely thinking of all of its customers
with regards to only offering the Subaru hard bed cover for the Baja
Turbo Leather Package models. This hard bed cover is extremely difficult
to install. This is why it is only offered for the above model as a
factory-installed, standard feature. Because of the difficulty in
installing this bed cover, it is only done at the factory by trained experts.
We do not offer this bed cover as a dealer installed option simply
because of the difficulty in installing it.

While we do not offer this bed cover as a dealer installed option, some
dealers may be ordering the bed cover from the factory and installing
it on their customer's vehicles. Subaru dealers can do this. While we
would recommend that they not do it, ultimately this is a decision for
the dealers to make.

Subaru of America cares about all of its customers. Unfortunately, we
have to make some difficult decisions, some of which may seem to be
non-customer friendly. This situation is not that at all. We only wish
to provide our customers with quality and cannot ensure this by offering
this extremely difficult to install feature as a factory-installed
feature only.

I am sorry that I cannot provide you with the responses you were hoping
for. I do hope that the above information restores your faith that
Subaru of America is a caring and thoughtful company. If you need any
further information now or in the future, please let us know.

Sincerely,

John J. Mergen

Bed cover

I just order the Snug Fit hard cover painted to match, from my Subaru dealer for 1,100. Suppose to be drill-less. Snug Fit makes a really nice cover for the Baja. Mine is not yet installed but I'll post pics when it is finished.

I have the vinyl soft cover on my 06 Turbo. I had to take it off this weekend to transport a miniature horse cart. I was dismayed to see what a horrible mess the dealer made "drilling" holes to attach the "hard" part of the bed cover. I use quotes around drilling because these holes don't exactly look drilled. They look more like they punched random holes in the rails with a very small drill and then used a swiss army knife to scrape out an oddly shaped area. Even the little bushing-like inserts in those holes don't match.. they must've lost one and just used something they found lying around the shop that looked close enough. I guess they expected me to never take the cover off. This really sucks because a NICE cover like the OZ will not cover up this mess!

I saw a silver non-turbo with CT plates today at IBM in Poughkeepsie NY. The bed cover looked to me to be an OZ. I think that's what I'll get eventually.

Your story is scarey. I'm totally trying to avoid your issue. I wonder if you can buy a replacement bed liner? Don't tell me a dealership did this. I told my dealership I want to take pics of the install and post it here. Will they let me? This remains to be seen. If they do though chances are my install will have been given due care.
