A couple of years ago I swapped the transaxle in my daughter's 98 Forester. Her front differential had gone bad. I went up and pulled the auto tranny from another Forester that had ben overheated. The Baja really isn't all that different. Rear driveshaft, CV axles (you undo the front ball joints), exhaust "Y" pipe, a small crossmember, the shifter linkage and one or two "plug and plays" The lower bolts were bit tricky to get to. You will definitely want to drain the old tranny first. I did this using only a regular floor jack, but I had drilled the lift plate so I could bolt a larger plywood pad to it.
I did the whole job by myself, and I also have a small garage - only 10 feet wide. Dennis

The second part of your question involving identical models, I’m still not sure what all the differences are but as I saw there were maybe some different gear sets for the differential among different cars but there is a sticker right on top of the transmission you should be able to match up.

Thanks guys, will have to look into it a little more. Luckily, half my problem was solved with new spark plugs!

Today's (This Week) upgrade is:

BFG KO2 235/75/R15 on Basset 15x7 rims with 4inch offset.

Includes: ECU reposition (since the wells are cut out); what a pain.

It's the OEM fuel door. I just vinyl wrapped it matte black.

I will have it on my lift here in the next few days when I install my Gorilla 1' strut spacers and wheel spacers. I'll snap an undercarriage pic!

Well it looks great. Is vinyl wrapping something done at one of those car places that do the graphics?

I’m sure they could do it for you or even sell you some vinyl. I ordered some online and did it myself. Way cheaper.
