I thought about the tall gear thing, but am afraid it might affect trailer towing. Dennis
Look closer, you may be on to something. Also, the fully assembled trans:

Also I think you're right that a non-turbo 4 cylinder would struggle with a taller 5th gear while towing. My baja will be running soon with a 2001 outback H6.

[smilie=666.gif] Now you have my FULL attention. Maybe make a dedicated thread to the conversion? So was that a JDM score? I had kind of looked at those, but at the time they were unavailable, and PRICEY.
The six speed thing does nothing for me as there seems to be no advantage other that the exercise for my right arm doing more shifting. The dual range, on the other hand, could greatly improve off road potential (although there seem to be some who disagree with that too). Dennis

The dual range was from a JDM 03 forester. I saw it on Craigslist and immediately drove down to Portland (from Seattle) to get it. It was $450.

Nobody wants to hear it but an auto subaru is much better as an offroader. Especially with a locking rear diff such as a "Torq Locker." I installed one of those in my Baja too. My goal is to have a capable onroad and off roader. Not for rock climbing, but to go safely down fire roads to reach awesome camping spots.

WOW! I would have been all over a deal like that. I'd definitely stop for a lottery ticket on my way home.

Yeah, I keep seeing that in various posts - but I have a manual...

Might be another future consideration

Kind of where I'm coming from too

You can use the switch bank from similar era Nissan that is a direct replacement which includes the auto up/down on both front windows. See YouTube link below with instructions and part numbers...

No pictures (got too busy), but I replaced my steering rack. Not a lot of fun, but I've done worse. Dennis
