What's Your VOTE Keep The 5 or upgrade to a 6 Speed

Post by tonys123 »

06 Turbo
1st gear messed up the other day it started after I had it in first and I gave it Gas and clutch was fully ingaged and I started moving forward and it popped out of gear making a slam noise ... now I have to be at a almost complete stop to get it to go into first smooth with out making grinding sound .. I currently bought a bunch of part to put on in the winter up pipe, down pipe, cold air, new turbo, intercooler and blowoff, adjustable boost. In the future water meth and air ride..
I'm not sure if I should keep my 5 and fix it or go for the gusto and find a 6 speed to rebuild and throw in ...

I'd say whatever is easier/cheaper. I have absolutely no experience on repairing/replacing transmissions.

If I could have 6th gear I would love it. Sometimes I have to haul a small trailer and the gearing is fine for that but on the highway 5th is not high enough. That being said the kind of swap you are talking about is so far above my skill I could not beging to suggest which option is better.

I remember hearing the 5- and 6-speeds have the same (or very similar) top gear ratios, so it won't make a difference when cruising on the highway. It's the other gears that have different ratios so you can be within the engine's power band more consistently. Check http://www.gearhack.com/Forums/Automoti ... Public.pdf

Since it's not my money, I say 6-speed.

Obviously we don't know what your bank account looks like and that should be the main deciding factor... not random opinions from strangers over the internet who like to throw money at our cars

Well I'm not worried about money just open to suggestions and possible issues on a 6 speed swap idk if a 6 speed save on gas milage? what are the positives and negatives ? Are the stronger and better since I'm adding all the other parts I kinda don't se the point of dropping the same 5 speed in it ..

fuel economy: not likely. If you're careful, tighter gear ratios means you can keep the engine at the optimal range for FE easier (but what's the fun of that?!) but the on/off throttle can offset that. On the highway, top gear is what matters and the 6sp isn't much different than the 5sp in that department. Unfortunately the range from 1st to top gear isn't changing. I'm guessing the 6sp is stronger since it's in the high performance cars but that's just a guess and, frankly, once it's strong enough, any stronger is just spending money.

Benefits: fun. maybe a little mileage. stronger box. Easier to skip gears.

downsides: if you ever got tired of shifting, you'll get tired a little quicker now. Cost. Additional parts (?)

Do it 'cuz you want it and have the dough to burn. That's about it.

That's the way!
Take a look at this Nitro's thread, viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2531, he did a similar mod with a 2013 WRX Sti 6-speed into his '03 classic, also put a 2012 WRX engine in it.
Might have some solutions if you run into any problems.
