Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
SUMMARY:
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is conducting a limited regional recall for certain model year 2003-2005 Subaru Legacy, Outback, and Baja vehicles, as well as 2004-2005 Subaru Impreza (including WRX/STI) vehicles, that are currently or have ever been registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and equipped with Takata-brand passenger side air bag inflators. Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
CONSEQUENCE:
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the vehicle occupants.
REMEDY:
Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger side air bag inflators free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Owners of Saab vehicles should call toll-free at 1-800-955-9007.
NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
