It seems the cheap ones simply splice a resistor into a sensor wire, causing the ECU to think it's running leaner/richer/cooler/hotter/etc. than it really is. I recently bought a 2002 Outback where this happened to the previous owner, too. Although, in this case, it was because the three bolt that secure the latch mechanism were loose, and the hood wasn't latching properly. Tightened the three bolts, and never had a problem since.

Are the lights on the dashboard working for all of the doors, indicating which of the four doors are open? If so, at the very least, we know the switches are working.

Which door light are you referring to? The courtesy light to illuminate the ground, or the lights in the dashboard to indicate which doors are open?

I thought I read the recommended max is 1.5" to 1.75" of lift before things start wearing out faster... It'll likely work, but my guess is it'll accelerate CV joint wear. I haven't done it, so can't say for sure. Maybe a few others on here can give more insight.
