Exhaust Gasket Replacement

I started hearing what sounded like an exhaust leak on my 03 Baja a few weeks back. I finally got the chance to crawl under it today and found the leak coming from where the catalytic converter and resonator pipe meet up. The gasket that was there was pretty much gone. I picked up a new gasket and spring bolt set and when I went to put the gasket on the end of the converter, it didn't fit. I got another one and it also did not fit. Guy at the parts store said he did not know what the problem was. Something I'm missing or is it just me??? Thanks.
