Hit deer. Part it or sell it?

Post by 549 »

I recently hit a deer with my baja (@ 75 mph). It did a lot of damage to the left front. I only had liability insurance on it since it had a salvage title (previous owner had a rear end collision ) so I'm stuck with it. With the orange title, I can't get enough out of it to make it worth putting the money into fixing it.

Is it worth the trouble to part out or should I just try to sell it as is to someone who may want a project?

Thanks for your input.

2003 with 187000 miles.

My guess is you'll get more money by parting it out, since it looks like most of the body is in decent shape, if you have the space/time to do it. But I don't have any experience with parting cars vs selling, so I can't say for sure.

Actually, if you do decide to part it, let me know how much you'd want for the plastic bezel around the HVAC controls/radio, the plastic piece that holds the three buttons (fog lights, cruise, wiper heater) on the left of the steering wheel, the fuel injectors, the plastic grills that cover the fog lamps (if you still have them), and the...one other thing that slips my mind at the moment.

Also, I think someone else on this forum recently posted they wanted some cross bars for the roof rack.

Thanks for the input. I'm weighing my options but I'll need to start figuring out what these parts go for. I'll keep you posted anarchy1024.

I live in Grand Rapids, and may be interested in parts too. Keep us posted.

@dalerich what color is your baja? I was in grand rapids regularly this summer and saw some there. I have the bright red baja with off road lights and bike racks!

I leave tomorrow morning to KY in hopes of bringing it back. :D So don't have it yet, but it will be Dark Blue.

looks like you might get away with two fenders and a hood and a grille. I'd repair it

Sorry...it's been a while. After a lot of research and an estimate from a body shop I know and trust, I decided to sell it. I had a few offers from people who had seen it sitting and on the trailer. I agreed on a price with a guy and when he came to get it, the crack in the timing cover confirmed my fear....the timing belt let go when we went to load it. Needless to say, I had to give a but of a discount.

Now I've got a couple leftover parts. One wheel in pretty good shape and some roof rack crossbars.

And, what's worse, I'm currently Baja-less.

My condolences... I'm sorry for your loss.

Are you thinking about selling the roof rack crossbars?
