Automatic or stick? They are different. Year to year may also be different. Sticks have a (as I recall) fluid (viscous) coupling between front and rear. Automatics (my 06 Forester) have a solenoid actuated clutch pack that functions like a transmission clutch pack or motorcycle clutch. IIRC, this is controlled by the PCM and sensors that tell if one wheel is spinning differently. On this system, there is a fuse you can pull to disable the AWD feature giving you FWD only if there is an issue with your AWD (my Forester had the issue). I pulled the driveshaft, rear tranny case, clutch pack, and cleaned all the plates and the solenoid. A fresh fluid change with Valvoline ATF and my binding issues were gone. The Baja systems should be similar Dennis
EDIT: this article seems to cover it http://www.awdwiki.com/en/subaru/

The link in the second post has diagrams, including the automatic. Are you looking for a particular picture or diagram?

What are you trying to do?

I mean what are you trying to learn from it? is it malfunctioning and you want to troubleshoot/fix it? do you want to swap it out for something else? just want to know how it works for the sake of knowing?
