Need rear diff 2003 Manual NA

Post by Platypus172 »

Howdy! i just bought this little truck a month ago. I love the damn thing. it needs a rear diff, i think. Im not a mechanic, but I can do some things. i have questions though:

1.Which Subies out there are good donor cars?
2.How can you tell if a rear diff is the one are there markings?
3.I think the rear diff on my car is 4.11 gear, if Im wrong, please correct me.
4.How hard is this job? is there a video somewhere?

2003 Baja Manual NA. 240k. Transmission replaced and is at 86k. front axles replaced. timing replaced. Head gaskets leak oil but do not mix or run hot. AC does not work(holds pressure), sunroof does not work. Any help appreciated, this is my first Subaru.[img][img]

This transmission chart might be a good place to start:

My understanding is, any 2000-2004 Outback/Legacy rear diff with the same ratio will work, but haven't had a need to try it personally. What happened to the current diff?

Thanks for the reply!

A mechanic(owns wrx), said the rear diff has a leaky seal and either water got in or was run dry and the bearings are shot.

You want one off of a Leg or OB. Most manuals will have the 4.11, and non OB autos may. Sizing of the diff is all the same going back into the 80's, the thing you need to look for is how the axles attach. The Baja has the stubs on the axle that insert into the diff, they just pop in and pop out. Some older diffs will have the stub attached to the diff and the axle attaches to that with a pin.

Imp's are going to have a smaller diff, avoid if you can.

After calling Subaru dealerships around me, I was told to look at rear diffs for Legacy Outbacks 2000-20004, with the same drive gear.
