Intermintent vibration

Post by vollako »

My AT baja is experiencing vibrations at idle, some times I have to shift to neutral and it goes away, will this be an indicator of harmonic balancer, cv axles or universal joints, or a trany converter going bad.

Thanks for your input.

I'm not really sure what it could be... were you able to figure it out?

For one thing, looks like my spark plugs were degrading since I bought it last December. In a trip to San Antonio I had to push the gas all the way, and white smoke came and then CEL appeared, so I thought my CAT was gone, but when back in Houston, went to O'reilly and OBD showed misfiring at 3 Cyl.
Installed a new set of NGK Iridium’s BKR5EIX-11, CEL cleared and passed emissions state inspection flawlessly, Sure a lot of improvement in performance.

Still have a vibration from 2nd to 3rd gear, when accelerating, but next step will be replacing front axles, since I noticed loud noise when backing up, may be someone can tell me if this is an indication of axles joints going bad. Will update later when done.

I'm no expert, but it looks like the center electrode got so worn down that the gap increased, it started misfiring, and lead to the performance/smoke problems. Did you replace, or at least check, the cables at the same time?

No idea about the axles... if it doesn't happen when going forward, could it be the transmission, since it uses additional gears for reverse?

Looks to me that the threaded portion of the new plug is much longer than that of the old plug....

Maybe just an optical illusion? I count 13 threads on both plugs... so if the pitch is the same, the length should be the same...?
