Gas Milage

Post by stefan »

I got to thinking (as the price of gas just FELL a penny here) what kind of milage you all are getting???
I'm driving a 03 5 speed- I use 87 octane (the cheap stuff) mostly back country roads
I have only taking 3 readings- 27.6, 29, 28.4 MPG
So what does everyone else get?

I have a '06 Baja Turbo MT, and I've only been getting between 18 and 21 mpg. I drive with a real heavy foot though, I like to accelerate rapidly! I've gotten as high as 23mpg on highway trips, but really seem to average about 19mpg. Not very good mileage, but the 'fun factor' outweighs the price of gas in my opinion! Plus my last rig was a 5000 lb. 4 dr. 4x4 with a thirsty V8, so the Subaru get's good mileage compared to what I'm use to! I'm happy with my mileage because I know I could improve it simply by adjusting the way I drive. You seem to be getting awesome mileage!

Yea- I have driven standard all my driving life (I have only owned 2 automatics my entire life) and I really know How to get the most on them- Heck even my 98 Dakota with the 5.2 liter V8 5 speed and 123,000 miles still got 17 to 18 MPG- My last car (a 98 Ford Escort) used to get 45 to 50 MPG!!!! Love the short shifting!

My 03 automatic is getting about 24-25 right now. And thats with running the a/c as it has been warm out. Drops off alot when I tow my atv, about 19 mpg. Most of my driving is city, with a little highway. I did get 31.1 the first time I took it up north on vacation. Nice day, freeway cruisin, no a/c on. Mike
Even though I work on Dodges, I don't own one.

You must have a thing for statistics! Very impressive, the way you are keeping track. It is certainly not a bad idea.

I'm getting about 28-29 mpg with my 03 Sport.

Actually the last car I had came equipped with a sophisticated computer that told me what my MPG was since last reset. When I got the Baja, I went looking for a program that would run on my phone that would help me keep track. I found AutoMobile from http://www.linkesoft.com, it is real easy to use.

2005 baja sport, running 87 octane from 87 stations yields about 22 MPG city. I probably get 25-28 highway.

Stefan, 27.5 is really good for a Baja. Remember, all the awd stuff is spinnin and drivin all the time, so there is more drag than a fwd car. Mike

Yea I guess- And at 75 MPH that little engine is churning out in the 3500 RPM range- I was just hoping for a bit better- But on a good note- I only had to fill up 2x- THat 17 gallon tank held enough juice to get to albany- I filled up there (my gosh only $3.03 compared to my local stations $3.09) and got home with plenty to spare (I probably coulda pushed it on one tank of gas- But who wants to walk in the rain to get gas?)

I'm hoping to break 30

I just got my 2006 Baja Turbo and therefore only have two datapoints - 24.5mpg and 27mpg. These are calculated by filling the tank to full and then setting the trip odometer to zero. At some point after the tank is half way empty I refill it and then take the gallons of gas I just bought and divide by the miles shown on the trip odometer. This is a handy thing to do with any car because a sudden drop in fuel economy is often an early warning of car trouble that may be as simple as a dirty air filter. This is hard to judge on a brand new engine though since it hasn't broken in yet.

I try to drive conservatively since the Turbo requires the high priced gas and the manual says I shouldn't exceed 4000 RPM until essentially next year. The EPA ratings on the sticker were fun reading since they had to specify the low and high range for their testing. If you can't leave the turbo alone you can expect to get 11 mpg. I try to stay off the turbo and use the cruise control on long stretches of highway, but on the other hand when merging onto 80mph highway traffic I like that tickling feeling the turbo gives me and am willing to pay for it!
