Help reading Live Data and Freeze Frame on OBDII scanner

Post by deanrocker »

Hi. My 06 Baja, MT is running horribly. Vehicle shakes between 50 and 60 mph and the vehicle lacks power at the proper time, and overall just runs like shit at these MPH. RPMs is usually around 2k-3k. Oddly, things seem fine in the lower speeds and above 60 mph. Here is the Freeze Frame and Live Data on the most recent test. The engine code failure was for a loose gas cap.

I did not want to confuse anyone with too much data. But here is a side-by-side comparison of the most recent complete data set and freeze frame info from the last 2 times a check engine code was thrown. The one prior to the loose gas cap was a code P0244 (Tubrocharger/Supercharger Wastegate) Solenoid A Range/Performance. The 1st column are the numbers for the loose gas cap code. The second numbers for the P0244 code.

The VSS (mph) seems to jump off the page. But I purposely don't want to comment much as to what I think the problem is, as I don't want to flavor your opinions, which I'm sure are much more informed than mine.

One other piece of context that might help: I'm not sure why the temperatures read so cool. I'm in south Florida, and the ambient temperature is never below 70 degrees farenheit, so I'm not sure why the engine temperature would be significantly cooler. Don't know if that's relevant, but wanted to include nonetheless.

I'm not all that familiar with the freeze frame info. What I do see: it says your vehicle is doing in excess of 200 mph? And around the same RPMs as mine turns when I'm doing around 80. The timing of 40 degrees advance seems a little on the too much side. The air temp reading being too low???? (I'm in Florida too) Maybe there is an air temp sensor that is malfunctioning? Maybe multiple sensors malfunctioning (VSS?).
IIRC, our Subies have a mass airflow sensor. Maybe the air temp is built into the MAF? I know there are companies that sell "chips" (often just a resistor) that fools the ECM into thinking it is extremely cold outside and altering settings (mixture and timing) to compensate - the ALLEGED result is more power and economy (usually bull). Again, I am not fully up on some of this, but it also seems that there isn't much activity on this site.
I guess my main question would be: Is everything on your engine stock? No altered air intake or "chips"? Is it all correct OEM parts (a wrong MAF could send wrong info to the ECM). Did this suddenly change? Are you getting any pinging (spark knock)? Dennis

Thanks Dennis. You're noticing the same exact problems I have (including few people on this forum!) To my knowledge, its all stock. Engine sound fine at most speeds. Another symptom is it lacks power, and when I call for it, the turbo doesn't cooperate and the rpms will jolt upward but I get little additional power.
Hard to believe two sensors went bad (maf, vss).
I'm fearful on doing more damage, but since it's my daily rider, I have no choice.

I see another problem: both your MAF and MAP readings are phenominally, improbably high. Like higher than can be read by the sensors... for example, if the sensor reads 0-5v, you're showing 25 in the data there.

MAP = 700 doesn't make sense on any scale, even KPA that's 100 psi but a 25 or 3 bar map sensor should max out at 5v at 20 or 30 psi respectively. 100 psi would be 15v... or 14.xx which is what the charging system puts out

MAF works about the same.

ECT ought to go the other way but computers get funny when you overload them.

I wonder if you have a short to 12v on the 5v reference wire used by the suspect sensors.

Bad ECM, short in the wiring, Maybe the cluster but I don't think so.

Thanks Russel. Again, a lot of those numbers I am not familiar with. My former boss pretty much kept me in diesels and small engines. I wonder what the possibility is of a wrong plug being plugged into a sensor? We did run into that over on the Isuzu forum. The IACV had the same plug as the temp sensor and one guy got them crossed over. Basically fed 12V to the temp sensor (fried it) and the ECM was trying to read the IACV. Dennis
