Tail light assembly removal

Post by greymud »

All the documentation and videos i can find show two bolts holding the assembly in and they just slide back. After I remove the bolts, the whole thing wiggles but won't come out. Is there a tab in there or something?

I struggled with that, both on my Baja and my wife's Crosstrek. You've just got to get a firm hold on the taillight assembly--I used rubber gloves--and pull it straight to the rear. Be firm; it doesn't want to come out, but let it know who's boss.

Yes. There are two posts in the tail light assay that stick straight forward; There's a notch on each post, and they fit into grommets in the sheetmetal on the back of the sides of the bed. It's an extremely strong fit, and can require a bit of excessive force to dislodge. Mine were both exceptionally difficult to remove.

I went with a LED Brake Light upgrade, along with ballast resistors, and I ended up having to solder the ballast resistors in since the included push-through-insulation clip deals were absolute garbage.
